Kid Culture Creates Workshops!

If you haven't heard already, Kid Culture has moved!
to a beautiful new, spacious location at
3124 Dundas St. W.
Toronto, ON

Not just a store, Kid Culture now offers daily song and storytime.
As well as weekly craft workshops for ages 3yrs old +

I've stocked up on materials and prepared a fantastic list of simple projects for young ones who want to make and create.

Each workshop is about 45mins - 1hr (about enough time to peruse the goodies in the shop)
In every workshop, kids will create and complete their very own personalized project they can take home, use and be proud of.
It's amazing what kids can make with a few materials and instruction - about the same amount of time to sit down and relax with a cup of coffee at the local shops in The Junction!

What workshops are coming up next?

For the Grand Opening of Kid Culture's new location
on June 1st,
we're having a
Tote Bag making workshop.

In this workshop, each student is provided with a handmade natural cotton tote bag to personalize and decorate using a heat transfer technique, transferring student’s colourful images from paper to the tote.

Space is limited for this workshop so don't forget to register.

Workshop @ Needlework!

I'm very excited to be teaching a new and super fun workshop at Needlework in Hamilton next Saturday afternoon!

If you'd like to learn how or wonder how I make all those weirdo felted things I do, stop by the shop or register online here.

Saturday June 23rd 2pm - 5pm we'll be learning the basic of dry felting or Needle Felting!
Using just a couple of simple tools you'll learn how to transform raw wool into actual shapes! The workshop is a creatively open class, which means you can make anything your imagination can think of. I'm partial to felted animals myself. So bring your imagination and we'll have all you need at Needlework next weekend! Hope to see you there :D

**Update - Still some spaces available for the class, if you would like to join us for the class - get in touch!

Butter

When I was younger, my Aunt and Uncle had a dairy cow named Claire on their farm up in Marmora, about 20mins from Peterborough. Claire is a very good cow, she is the matriarch of the herd and is a pretty reliable alarm clock in the mornings. She's still around these days, but no longer works in the dairy industry.
As well as raising live stock and growing food, we do a lot of baking at the farm. Usually because there is a lot of food and fresh ingredients at our disposal. One of my fondest memories is when we used to pour the fresh milk in jars and shake them around the kitchen and the yard until they magically churned into butter. It seemed like magic at the time, now it's still kind of magical - but it's just nice to make my own fresh butter.

For anyone interested in making your own, here are some very easy/no-brainer instructions to make jar butter. If you have kids to entertain, this can be a fun activity they can do to help you in the kitchen.

Supplies/Ingredients
heavy cream
(I've used regular whipping cream - anything with a high milk fat content, say 35% M.F. or higher, will work perfectly)
jar or container with very secure lid
parchment to wrap butter in
energetic youth or strong arm
(you can also use a food processor or stand mixer instead)

Time
10-15 mins

Shelf Life
Fresh homemade butter is best consumed in 7 days refrigerated or 5 days on the table.
If you rinse it with ice water it will store longer, but I usually use it all before then.

Step1:
- Pour cream into jar, secure lid and shake
-1cup of cream will yield about 1/2 cup of butter + 1/2 cup of butter milk
I leave about 1-2inches of space from the lid so the cream has room to move.

Step2:
- After about 5 minutes you'll notice the mixture has separated into curds and liquid.
Pour out the liquid into a cup/container -You just made buttermilk!
- Close the lid and continue to shake, pouring out the liquid as it accumulates.
Keep shaking the jar until liquid stops separating from the butter.

Step3:
- After the buttermilk is all drained out, wrap the butter in the parchment
and allow to firm up in the refrigerator.
Before refrigerating the butter I like to shape the it into a log.

Enjoy your fresh homemade butter and buttermilk!

For anyone in the Toronto area this week. There is a movie @ TIFF called "Butter" staring Jennifer Garner, Olivia Wilde, Hugh Jackman, Alicia Silverstone and Ashley Greene. It's about the "hostile, high-stakes world of competitive butter carving." Pretty sure it's going to be hilarious.
Check here for movie times and details!

We went to the The Christie Conservation Antique Show in Hamilton this past weekend and I noticed there were tons of vendors selling old butter making tools like molds, presses, and churns.
They can be pretty valuable if you find authentic antiques.
Here are just a few listings I found on Etsy

Do Make Say Think

Sites like Instructables, and Design Sponge are my morning bread and butter that get me motivated for the day. I visit the sites regularly scoping out the latest and greatest from the DIY online community. They’re a great place to start when researching for a new project.
Youtube is especially helpful. I was able to teach myself crochet, knitting and tatting just from these amazingly helpful tutorials. As well as textiles, I really enjoy casting, sculpting, doodling, baking pies. I get a great feeling when I make somethings myself. The result isn't always pretty, but the challenge is the best part.

I have a large folder of bookmarked DIY tutorials that I like to dive into once in a while. Inspired by Karyn's "My Crafty List of Things To Do" over at Make Something.ca. I've decided to start my own project list to help trim down the folder size - but mostly to give myself the extra reminder that they are there, waiting for me to make them.
And also, I'll be making posts as I cross things off the list!

Here are some gems I found floating around in there. Found over at Instructables.com
