Apple picking is one of my favourite things about fall,
second only to Cosby sweaters and apple pie.
Every year we go to Stanley House farms in Waterdown to pick apples as well as pumpkins. However, last year the owners retired and sold off the remaining land leaving a void in the areas PYO market. They were a great farm, great crops and amazingly friendly staff. So we've started our search to find a farm to fill that void.

mom in the orchard |
We tried an orchard down the road from Stanley House that's popular. But with only one orchard and a limited variety of apples. We're looking for another farm to get us excited about apples again and restock our dwindling stash. We've heard some good things about Downey's Farm in Brampton and also Myers Apple Farm in Copetown. We're looking forward to visiting these two.

We're almost out of apples from our initial trip. We've been snacking and baking up a storm.
Made super tasty apple sauce, loosely following this recipe.
And even baked a pie for Thanksgiving topped with aged cheddar.
I like my apple pie alittle more tart and less syrupy then you find in the stores. Plus making a cheddar crust is always more delicious than store bought!

cored apples dipped in pancake batter and pan fried. |
Our breakfast-time happiness was discovered via Pinterest in the form of apple ring pancakes.
I modified these instructions to reflect the pantry options and my taste. We didn't have any pancake mix, so I used this recipe which worked out nicely.
